Aganang Schools Career Exhibition Commemorate Youth Month



EDUCATION PRIORITY IMPLEMENTED: GRADE 12 LEARNERS AND EDUCATORS EMPOWERED BY THE CAREER EXHIBITION IN CELEBRATION OF JUNE 1976 IN 20 YEARS OF FREEDOM

In celebrating 20 years of freedom, Aganang Local Municipality hosted Grade 12 learners from 8 circuits to take part in Schools Career Exhibition on the 20 June 2014 at Municipal hall.The exhibition was attended by learners and educators, universities and colleges, correctional services and the famous Makwena Makgakga "Kwenisto" from SABC Thobela FM. The Mayor's Office conceptualized the career exhibition idea through the deployed Youth Development learner,Mr Jerry Ramphele ."Part of my roles in Aganang Municipality is to put in practice what I am currently learning at the training college centre by developing and initiating youth programmes for rural areas. The main objective of Aganang school career exhibition was to create career awareness for our grade 12 learners focusing on scarce skills in celebration of Youth Month. We hope to provide a vehicle to disseminate useful career information and providing access to various career options for the rural and disadvantaged communities' youth", he explained the purpose of the event.

The Speaker of Aganang Council, Cllr Noko Ntsewa highlighted the importance of celebrating Youth activities as indicated by the President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma in his State of the Nation Address on 17 June 2014."Our municipality is hosting Aganang Schools Career exhibition when we are just commemorating the bravery of 16 June 1976 youth who were for better education of a black child. We are proud to have gathered all educational stakeholders to empower and uplift the life of our rural children with bright future in Youth month .The youth of today still faces many challenges in 20 years of democracy such as unemployment, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse and crime, but we appeal to all our learners to focus on their studies as is the key to success "said the Speaker in his welcoming words.

Learners were educated about the impact of committing crimes in their teenage years by the corrected offender Mr Peter Masenya. He discouraged learners not to associates themselves with friends who instill bad influence in their lives and the consequences of having a criminal record. "Prison is for punishment of wrongs we did and not a studying place. I appeal to you not to do things that will lead you to prison as life after prison is very challenging. The key to being successful in life is to respect your parents and teachers at all times", advised the corrected offender.

Aganang Municipality worked together with circuit managers to improve the educational values of Aganang schools by awarding performed schools in the annual Achiever's day celebration and Back-to-school campaigns aimed underperforming schools. On behalf of 8 circuits, Circuit Manager, Mr Maswanganyi applauded the municipality for organizing the fruitful schools career exhibition for educators and learners in the municipal zone. "Our learners are the future leaders of this country and is because our teachers are wonderful and genius. I advise our learners to be better citizens of Aganang Municipality ", said Maswanganyi.

Aganang schools career exhibition also created a linkage between schools in rural areas with colleges and universities. University of Venda, Capricorn FET College, Jeppe College, Boston College and the student financial aid Edu-loan provided information to learners about their requirements and course offered. More than 800 learners who attended the exhibition committed that they will study hard to obtain 100% in the academic year 2014.

On behalf of the Mayor, Chairperson of Community Services portfolio, Cllr Steven Phaka said that June is one of the special months in the history of the country. Cllr Phaka defined education as purposive intervention of an adult in the life of young adult helping him/her in attaining responsible adulthood. "It is important as the municipality to ensure that we contribute in the weel being and future our learners. A teacher must teach and a learner must learn", he said. Cllr Phaka further indicated that Aganang Municipality supports the school career exhibition as a way to acquire new skills, innovative and a source of skills. "It is disappointing to see our learners being stranded after completing Grade 12 becoming directionless". He explained. Cllr Phaka concluded that the issue of career choices need to be fixed in order to have employable graduates in future.

Motivational Speaker of the day, Mr Makwena Makgakga inspired Aganang learners to dream high despite their poor background.Makgakga urged learners to have a vision of their lives and be determined to face life obstacles in pursing their visions and dreams.

Learners representative Mavin Selemela from Mahlabela Secondary high school said that the career exhibition have taught them to dream and have visions in their lives. "Be a product of the decision you take in life and learn from the mistakes you made. Let's have a vision to drive our dreams with passion as Grade 12 learners in Aganang Local Municipality", motivated Selemela. He concluded that his fellow learners should know that real friends are text books and sleeping doesn't have reward.

The Chief Whip of Council, Cllr Malesela Teffo urged learners to take the career exhibition as the motivation before starting the final year examinations. "Let this exhibition encourage you to perform well as you will be sitting for your final assessments. Don't allow any circumstances to disturb your studies and we wish you good luck with your studies", said Cllr Teffo giving vote of thanks to educators and learners.

Aganang Municipality takes pride of having emerged stars such as Mr Lesetja Kganyago who is the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank ailing from Moletši,Judge Bernard Ngwepe ailing from Matlala, Sello Selota and many more.
