COOPERSPARK RESIDENTS EDUCATED WITH PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES TO PREVENT FIRE DISASTERS IN FIRE SAFETY WEEK CAMPAIGN
Work on fire team parading during the fire week safety campaign
Aganang Local Municipality celebrated International Fire Safety Week campaign in honour of the lives lost to fire fighters across the globe in Coopers Park community hall at Mankgodi village on Thursday (09/10/2014). The main purpose of the campaign was to commemorate all victims of fire disasters in the world and also to create awareness relating to managing fire matters encountered in the daily lives within households. Amongst the people to attend the event were The Speaker of Council, Cllr Marry Dikgale, Blouberg working on fire team, Emergency Management Services and Capricorn Disaster and Fire team and municipal councillors.
The workshop which was facilitated by Mrs MP Nake from the Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs aimed in guiding the Council in deciding between two options of implementing the act. The Council was given a proposal to either form a Joint Municipal Planning Tribunal or its own Municipal Planning Tribunal. The act seeks the formation of such a tribunal for the handling of planning and usage of land.
Capricorn District Municipality Fire Services, Mr Vincent Phophi said there has been highest reporting of fire cases from Aganang Local Municipality in the year 2014.”More than 25 cases of veld fire were attended in the municipality this year alone”, he explained. Residents were curiously and attentively listening to speakers and stakeholders when making various presentations on the subject. Many speakers emphasized that many fires starts at home and majority of them can be prevented. The Acting Mayor, Her Worship Cllr Lisbeth Mothata in her keynote address speech urged community members to be careful when wiring electricity in their houses as many fires disasters are caused by illegal electrical wiring and floods disaster.
"As declared by United Nations General Assembly, every Wednesday of October every year is regards as International Day of Disaster Reduction. As Aganang Municipality we celebrate safety against fire. It is important for us to educate each other about the prevention and caring of fire disasters as it will protect our nature and climate", said Acting Mayor, Cllr Mothata.
Cooperspark residents cautioned to avoid fire dangers in their households
Emergency Medical Services representative Phopy Takalani highlighted that they work together with fire fighters in fighting fire emergencies. A total number of 30 youth have been selected for fire fighting training in Aganang Local Municipality and will be employed in the fire station to be constructed between Ceres-Rampuru villages by the district municipality. Cooperspark residents expressed their concern over people who are dumping of their baby nappies in the open land as it results in air pollution and climate change.
