AGANANG MUNICIPALITY CELEBRATES OLDER PEOPLE`S MONTH



Her Worship Mayor, Cllr Maria Mokobodi pampering Fairlie elders with love

October month have been selected nationally as a month to celebrate the lives of older people in South Africa. The day is mostly characterized by activities meant to empower the elders or to give them encouragement for the role they play in the society. This was also the order of the day when Aganang Local Municipality celebrated older people`s month on the 21st of October 2014 at Lesedi Fairlie elderly centre.

Aganang Municipality Mayor, Her Worship Cllr. Maria Mokobodi addressed more than 50 elderly people from Fairlie urging them to enjoy their elderly life with peace of mind. Her Worship Mayor,Cllr Mokobodi promised the elders person that government will continue to prioritize services needed by senior citizens. "At your age, you do not need to put yourself under a huge burden of financial constraints be taking care of your grand-children, the money that government gives you is for you to take care of yourself" says Her Worship Cllr. Mokobodi.



Other intergovernmental departments which attended the event were SASSA, Capricorn EMS, Capricorn Disaster Unit, Matlala Victim Empowerment, Matlala SAPS and Blouberg Working on fire team. At the event senior citizens were also empowered with information related to Disaster reduction as October is also a month dealing with awareness programmes for Disaster Reduction. Capricorn EMS Unit emphasized the need for the senior citizens to take precautionary measures in their homes to avoid disasters.



Lesedi Fairlie Elderly Centre Chairperson Koko Mabotja thanked Aganang Local Municipality & Capricorn District Municipality for taking their time to celebrate Older people`s month with their centre. She says they receive overwhelming support from both municipalities from time to time. Koko Mabotja encouraged other elder`s people to take care of themselves and not allow anyone to abuse them. She says they should report to relevant authorities when someone tries to take away their pension funds.

In concluding her presentation Aganang Mayor, Her Worship Cllr. Mokobodi called on elders not to keep quiet when they are being abused because government is there to support them. She says together with the Department of Social Development, they will prioritize and support them.
