AGANANG LEADERSHIP CALLS FOR GOOD RELATIONS BETWEEN TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS IN BACK-TO-SCHOOL CAMPAIGN 2015

Sectors of government joined hands in Back-to-school campaign in Aganang schools

Her Worship Mayor of Aganang Local Municipality, Cllr Maria Mokobodi embarked on an annual back-to-school campaign in various schools within Aganang Local Municipality. The campaign is aimed at motivating both learners and teachers in secondary and primary schools that falls within the municipal jurisdiction. The main aim is to congratulate schools which performed exceptionally well during Matric final exams of 2014, and also to understand the working techniques being strategies applied by such schools in order to be shared with underperformed schools.

The Political Leadership Team (PMT) of the Municipality led by the Mayor, Cllr Maria Mokobodi together with The Speaker, Cllr Mary Dikgale, Chief Whip Cllr Malesela Teffo, EXCO members Ward Councillors,Circuit managers,Matlala and Mashashane SAPS dispersed in groups to visit the 16 identified poorly and best performed schools. A total number of 08 schools which performed well are, Mamolope High School 90%(Bakone circuit, Chika High School 100%(Moloto circuit), Moshidi High School 100%(Moletsi circuit), Ipopeng High School 96%(Mogoshi circuit),Mankoaedupe (Vlakfontein circuit),Dr MJ Madiba 85%(Maune Circuit),Ngwanasehlakwana 85,2%(Maraba circuit) and Phalatlou 94,7 %(Koloti circuit). The lowest poorly performed is Radipitsi high school which obtained only 9,2% pass rate in Grade 12.

The key challenges hampering learner performance identified during the back-to-school campaign visit included poor working relationship between teachers, poor relationship between principals and teachers, poor participation by parents in school matters. Other principals indicated lack of facilities and poor infrastructure in their schools as a concern. "The relationship between the teachers and the principals in any school serve as a guiding principle for the learners, learners should look upon you as teachers and lack of team work amongst teachers and school principals will confuse and frustrate the learners", emphasized the Mayor, Cllr Mokobodi.

The following were areas of focus by the campaign to help understand the nature of problems faced by visited schools. Pass rate for Grade 7 and 12 during 2012, 2013 & 2014, staff component, number of learners enrolled in the schools, teacher-learner ratio, state of the classroom environment, existence and functionality of the SGB committee, community involvement/support received by the school, school nutrition programme effectiveness, extra-mural activities/sports activities learners take part in, state of water, electricity and sanitation services, crime, drugs and substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and availability of stationery.

The primary schools which serve as the feeder to the identified high schools were also visited by the Mayor to assess how prepared learners are when they exit Grade 07 to Grade 08. The primary schools visit helped the municipality in understanding the level of knowledge and ability to read and write by learners from Grade 07 to secondary learning.

Her Worship Mayor, Cllr Maria Mokobodi encouraged the Matric Class of 2015 to work hard and always prioritize their school work to perform exceptionally at the end of the year. She requested all learners to start working hard and finish their syllabus early in order to be ready for final year exams.

The best performed school Chika high school congratulated by Her Worship Mayor, Cllr Maria Mokobodi and department of education in Back-to-school campaign.

She further encouraged both primary and secondary principals to engage in exchange programmes so that they can share critical information that can improve performance of the schools. "The principal of crèche must have interest in what is happening in the primary school, a principal of primary school must know what is happening in the local creche and secondary school and equally the principal of a secondary must have interest in what is happening in local feeder primary schools. Like our motto says "Mmogo re tla kgona" that should be the attitude amongst the principals". Our last leg of the back-to-school-campaign in 2015 will focus at the creches where everything starts.
